Reports in Italy suggest that Andriy Shevchenko is set to beat rivals Ronaldinho and Deco to this year’s Golden Ball.

According to respected Italian sports paper Gazzetta dello Sport the Ukrainian international has an unassailable lead over his Portuguese and Brazilian rivals.

“I don’t live for the Golden Ball,” insisted Sheva. “But if I don’t win it this year then I don’t know what more I have to do. If I do win it, then I will be very happy.”

Shevchenko helped Milan win Serie A last season by finishing Capocannoniere with 24 goals. He also scored his 100th League goal against Siena recently.

The competition, which is judged by France Football, was won last year by Juve’s Czech star Pavel Nedved.

If Shevchenko does pick up the coveted trophy, it will be the first time that two players from Eastern European countries have won the award in consecutive seasons.

It's not official. The official news will be published in December's France Fotball issue, on December 13th. But today's La Gazzetta dello Sport claims Sheva's advantage is alredy to big to be caught by the remaining votes. They were right last year about Nedved, will see. Let's hope!

I'm loathe to start celebrating prematurely as these things have a nasty habit of biting you on the behind, but the news looks to confirm what we'd all hoped for. I'll keep everything crossed until December 13th

    Forza Sheva!!
