Serie A welcomes first female linesman

Serie A welcomes first female linesman

Serie A will have its first female linesman during the 2002-03 season, it has been confirmed.

32-year-old Cristina Cini has been promoted to the top two flights after several years in Serie C football.

The married Tuscan will become the first ever female assistant referee in Serie A and B. She hails from the same refereeing section as World Cup Finalist Pierluigi Collina.

“I am ready to put up with the usual controversy that follows the games on a Sunday evening,” said Cini.

A former athlete, she has passed all the stringent health checks that are used to class referees and assistants.

Cini has already taken part in a European match, when Fiorentina beat Dynamo Bucharest 4-1, and is married to a former referee.

Female officials are not new to the world football scene. Austrian referee Nicole Petignan has already taken charge of a top flight match.

Ghislaine Peron Labbe held the flag in several European games, including the Intertoto and UEFA Cup games featuring Sampdoria and Bologna.

Nelly Viennot acted as a linesman in the last edition of the Champions’ League and the 1996 Olympic games.

Caroline Domenech ruled on a friendly between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid at the dawn of the year.

As one new face enters the arena, several others are forced to retire due to their age. Gennaro Borriello, Stefano Braschi and Graziano Cesari have hung up their whistles.

Meanwhile, refereeing designator Paolo Bergamo took this opportunity to look back at the controversial decisions during the 2002 World Cup.

“As FIFA President Sepp Blatter said, many of the results on the field, and in particular Italy’s, were affected by the referees and linesman. These people were chosen because of their country of origin and the politics of that, not their talent as officials.”

Only one Italian representative was at the World Cup and Collina was chosen to take charge of the Final between Brazil and Germany.

“We are one of the federations with the best record in the world for referees,” continued Bergamo, “and we hope to continue that tradition.”
