I have a love for the movies. The last thread I made was only for the Summer movies so I have made this one to continue discussions on movies past, present and future around the world. But additionally I have added TV and Music so that all aspects of entertainment can be discussed here as well. This will keep things tidy in one thread.
James Cameron's highly anticipated movie event of the year AVATAR has been sold out for its November 24, 2009 private showing to a select audience. The official trailer broke all past records for most viewings! Everybody who had a chance to see 17 mins of the people in the official opening has been raving about it ever since. Cameron is playing it perfectly when it comes creating hype for the movie.
The teaser kept one guessing but the first official trailer gives an idea of the storyline and plot. It has changed the ball game because it is very exciting.
You can view it below in YouTube HD. The Gunships are fantastic looking IMO and I will purchase one. The most legendary movie toy IMO is either the Millennium Falcon or the Ecto-1 vehicle. :) I was a sucker for that Caddy.
There are strong rumours around that the total cost for the making of Avatar will be $500 million! The movie itself cost around a shade over $300 million but around $200 million is for the marketing and hype! :P Cameron is good enough to give heart attacks to investors! High risk high reward. That expenditure on one single movie easily dwarfs the amount spent on Titanic which was less than half. Heck, with that money we could build our own stadium!
It means the movie better be number 1 in the US for at least 6 weeks and it has to rake in around $400 million from the rest of the world to make a reasonable profit. There is a part 2 planned as well so they might have already put that in planning and like Perez spent it all in one go for the sets and props and re-use them in Part II saving the costs.
My advice to all of you is to watch AVATAR in a proper 3D cinema where possible. Don't do a Gaylliani and save a few bucks on the ticket price or travel cost. Just experience it in the best cinema near you with proper 3D capability. That means IMAX or one of the new DLP cinemas. It will be a visual treat. You will travel to Pandora. This movie will change cinematography. One of the reasons for its high cost of production is that no movie has ever been filmed with this technology.
I've seen Star Trek, G.I. Joe and Transformers II: Revenge of the Fallen so far. Loved Star Trek and thought that G.I. Joe was good. Transformers II was laughable but good entertainment as I had left out my brain at the door. I was prepared for the BS.
I will see Mann's Public Enemies over the weekend. Waiting for Angels & Demons and Terminator Salvation.

The Last Airbender
I am "not" a fan of any of M. Night Shyamalan's movies. They are always based on a twisted theme full of BS. It is also one of the reasons he has gone down rather than up after his first sleeper hit [The Sixth Sense] starring Bruce Willis.
However, I saw this teaser in one of the DVDs and it had me thinking to perhaps watch this movie when it is released in Summer 2010.
I am going to boycott all of M. Night's movies in future if this turns out to be another one of his bullshit twisted movies. Last chance saloon for him.
The movie is based on a book so we will see multiple parts.
I like the teaser a lot with powerful music and lots of intrigue. He better not mess it up.

I only got to know about Avatar when the trailer was released. Didn't know this was a project by Cameron and that he had worked on it for a long time at the time, but I really thought it looked like a generic sci-fi movie. But reading up a little on it, the good impressions and seeing the newest trailer has me hyped for the movie. I'm eager to see this revolutionary technology that may be a little hard to see in a trailer.
But I really can't see what's so ground breaking with the CGI used, this isn't the first film filmed in front of a green screen and my biggest problem with CGI is always going to be that if you know the creature isn't real then you know it's CGI and therefore it looks kind of fake.
Star Trek was pretty good, Transformers 2 was entertaining but GI Joe was bad IMO. It was the acting and the dialogue that bothered me and even though Transformers 2 wasn't that much better in that area, I liked it more because I liked the action scenes more.

Avatar is going beyond CGI. A simple CGI movie sets one back $150 million tops for a movie ... make that $200 but is stretching it.
The technology when it comes to filming, concept design and sheer visual periphery is where this movie is going to stand out in 3D. The trailer even though it is in HD is showing glimpses of the visual richness but it is still not enough IMO. You have to watch the trailer very closely about 5 times to start noticing the small details in the background to start appreciating what this movie is striving to do visually. I just hope that the script is also good enough to complement the visuals otherwise it just becomes a special effects extravaganza and nothing more.
That is what is going to set it apart. If you continue reading on the movie and the subject itself, there are claims that the movie's visuals have the capability to ignite and send messages from the eyes to that part of the brain which has not been touched. I don't even know if that sort of thing is doable but a claim is a claim.
The official website has lots of content now.
RealD 3D will be the 3D technology for this movie. So it's best to go to one of the cinemas below in Sverige for viewing of Avatar. Sverige has 7 of them.

Watch "James Cameron's Vision" featurette over there. All new videos will be uploaded there in the buildup to the worldwide premeire on December 18, 2009.
I don't know about the plot but the movie will be a visual treat with stunning depth in imagery. The 1080p/720p trailers can be downloaded from the official website as well.

Whoa there is a 3D movie theatre on Hötorget? I didn't know that, I thought the only 3D theatre was the IMAX at Cosmonova but that one only shows documentaries. Well now I know where I'm going to go to watch CGI heavy movies from now on.
Hm you say that the premiere is on December the 18th? That's when my last exam is, maybe I'll treat my self with a movie that night then :)

Nope, i havent seen it yet, but Im fascinated with german history (University degree) so will definately go watch it this week.
Also Haneke's last film (caché) was pretty gripping - about french guilt with colonisation in North Africa etc, and also filmed in a surveillance/voyeuristic style, which also echoes our current surveillance dominated world perfectly.
That was a brilliant film techinically etc, but I didnt love it. I think the same will be of das Weisse Band. Brilliant and important film, which will deliver its points perfectly, but a hard film to really love.
On the other hand, I got baked last night and watched this awesome Korean film called "In the Mood for Love" which is about 2 couples, and the male and female from both couples figure out that their spouses are having an affair, and they start to roleplay what their spouses would be doing etc. fantastically shot, more like Art than Movie I suggest you go see it.
Finally, who can talk about korean Cinema without mentioning Oldboy?!

On a slight tangent, has anyone seen the original Nosferatu from 1929 with Max Schreck? It is the difinitive horror IMO, so beautifully done. It was on Sky the other week, it just gets better

Sherlock Holmes is opening soon. Robert Downey Jr. is playing Sherlock Holmes. As much as I like him, I think that Guy Ritchie has overdone the Robert speaking an English accent bit. I've only seen the trailer and from it I think he is over-doing the whole thing to quite an extent and it is annoying to say the least.
My impression of Sherlock has always been a calm, aristocratic and sophisticated detective. In the trailer I see a very different type of a Sherlock who is "trying" to be posh but actually is not. I maybe wrong but that's the impression the trailer gives out in the small acting bits of Robert Downey Jr. It's like the script and movie has been modified to be a glorified adventure of Sherlock. Over-acting seems to be the order of the day.

yeah, i am a huge Holmes fan, im not sure if you will have seen it, but there was a TV series adaptation in the 1980's with Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes, and it was superb, he portrayed Holmes magnificently. Holmes was as you say a calm cerebral man, who was also a manic depressive, and Brett being one himself was IMO the ultimate holmes. He also bore a strong resemblance to early drawings of how holmes was meant to look.
The Downey junior Holmes seems to have taken on the mould of Hugh Jackman's Van Helsing! I like Jackman, but the action hero Van Helsing was BS in my opinion. But thats Holywood!

I used to follow the Sherlock Holmes TV series. It was really good.
Compare that to this popcorn flick coming up and it gives me the horrors on what Downey Jr. and Ritchie have done to the character. Robert is so over-doing his role that it actually looks like ACTING. That's really bad IMO. Even Jude Law's Watson seems to be highly unimpressive.

2012 is number 1 in the US although it is getting pretty bad reviews. I think maybe because there is not enough competition and therefore these results are coming in like this. It has superb special effects but just like any other Roland Emmerich movie, this is based on a natural disaster from the Mayan mythology! It's all doom and gloom.
I will watch it but it's best to leave your brain out of theatre before watching it. Just follow the regime used before watching Transformers II. :d
Shifting to music a bit ..... anybody enjoying Timbaland's songs nowadays? I really like his songs so far. He has collaborated with Keri Hilson, Nelly Furtado and a few others and I like his style. Really good songs IMO. Music and the choices that govern it are controversial so I expect that the opinions will vary.
I wouldn't be surprised if Filli likes Boys 2 Men. :d Yeah, the four dudes who were always crying in their songs and were a huge hit in their day!

Refer to http://www.imdb.com if you doubt any movie or simply want information on movies and TV. It's the reference website with the most accurate and complete information.

Public Enemies
Finally, got to see Michael Mann's [Heat] PUBLIC ENEMIES and I have to say that I enjoyed the movie a lot. Johnny Depp's performance as John Dillinger was pretty good. Christian Bale as FBI Agent Melvin Purvis gave it a nice balance.
I was starving to see a good Michael Mann movie since Heat and this one was really good IMO. Collateral and Miami Vice also had brilliant gunshot sounds. Collateral was a pretty good movie but Miami Vice was a letdown for me. Public Enemies didn't do too well at the Box Office because people were enjoying the robots fighting each other on our planet amongst other things. :P
This is a powerful gangster movie supported by a fantastic soundtrack by Elliot Goldenthal.
Otis Taylor's"Ten Million Slaves" is a fantasticccccc song and is played at the right time in the movie. Brilliant stuff by Mann. :)
A trademark about Michael Mann's movies is the sound of the gunfire. He focuses heavily on making the sound of the gunfire as authentic and realistic as possible. Heat set the benchmark in the bank heist scene and this one carries on in that tradition replicating the sound of the gunshots very effectively.
This is a distinct thing I have noticed in Michael Mann's movies. The gunshots in other movies ranges from good to excellent but in Mann's movies it is reference standard.
The movie comes with its flaws. I would have liked to see more of Babyface Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd (although his opening was powerful). If you can accept the flaws then this is one of the best gangster movies. Before anybody says anything about The Untouchables or Goodfellas, I will say that they were excellent and better. :d Bugsy [based on the life of NY gangster Bugsy Seagal] also gets a good shout as a good gangster movie.

Hey, Ive recently had a lot of time off (graduated Uni and inbetween jobs..) so been watching a lot of quality TV and reading a lot of books...etc etc you all know the drill im sure.
Anyway I was wondering if any of you watch the Tv show, The Wire?
It's absolutely phenomenal. The best thing on TV ever. No joke. I could go on about it for ages, also I finished watching the Sopranos last night (I think this is a bit more well known). For me - and many others id imagine - The Wire is better, but the Sopranos is really good too. At times I found myself drifting in and out with the Sopranos, not the same Intensity as the Wire (im sure it would have been better for the Sopranos had I watched it before the Wire).
Anyway, TS is a cinematic masterpiece definately, and i LOVE psychologic stuff, symbols motifs etc and this is absolutely laden with imagery. The finale was pure brilliant too. I love how it ended with Journey - dont stop believing etc and you know. Ever since ive stopped watching it, I havent really been able to shake it out of my head, because many of the characters are v real (even if a little cuntish).
Anyway was just wondering if anyone has watched either of these and wants to talk about them.
Also anybody read any good books lately? I've literally been devouring Russian Literature in the last few weeks. Whilst i liked Crime and Punishment (the reasoning, framework paranoia etc in it was truly masterful) I didnt really get involved with the main protagonist in contrast to his later work The Brothers Karamazov which for me was simply brilliant....
Didnt really rate Anna Karenina as highly as its been made out. Great great book for sure, but yeah would only give it an 8/10. Lolita on the other hand by Nabokov was awesome. I cant believe I was siding with a guy who plots to have his way with a 12 year old "nymphet" as he calls them. Truly disturbing and phenomenal writing

I've heard about Dexter but never really seen it. Is it a serious drama or light-hearted comedy? What's the show about?
I'm following Entourage (awesome show), Lost, 30 Rock and now Eastbound & Down.
I followed Prison Break but it turned out to be a truly pathetic show. Only Season 1 and 2 were decent. It just went downhill very quickly after that.
Has anybody seen or followed The Office? I've heard mixed reviews about it and am not sure if it is worth punting a few bucks to buy the first season of it.
