Jaap Stam is now officially a Milan player but his first comments following the officialization of his transfer to the rossoneri was dedicated to his now former squad, Lazio.

The Dutch defender declared to a local Roman radio station: "Thank you Lazio; you will always be in my heart..."

A BIG DEAL

http://media.acmilan.com/pics/7965_s200.jpg

With no rest. To celebrate does not mean to feel you have made it. On the contrary, the club, with an attitude that is directly conveyed to the team as well, always feel to be in competition. The day after the party at the 'Castello Sforzesco', voilà Jaap Stam. The Dutch international - European champion with Manchester United in 1999, Dutch champion in 1997 with Psv Eindhoven and three-time Premiership champion with Manchester United, from 1998 to 2000 - has joined the Rossoneri. The announcement had been in the air for some weeks but became official just before 11am CET on Monday morning with a statement on the Milan website. Stam is a player endowed with an extraordinary strength, who provides great confidence and, if he finds the ideal conditions during a game, he can even score. The defender, who has freshly won the Italian Cup at the end of a brilliant season with Lazio, is a close friend with Clarence Seedorf who anticipated early one year ago that if his team-mate at Netherlands had decided to move from the capital to join another Italian club, that would have been Milan. Alessandro Nesta also has a high opinion of his former colleague at the Biancocelesti and he always speaks well of the Dutchman with everybody interested or involved in football. Stam is a big deal, one of the most-dreamt and sought players. The most important clubs have chased him, but Milan were able to do the final sprint at the right moment, just like Italian cyclist Marino Basso did in a far-off World championship to outdo Franco Bitossi. With Jaap Stam Milan actually want to cycle toward those 20 titles that are the new target president Silvio Berlusconi set during the party at the 'Castello Sforzesco' on Sunday evening.

Come on, I dont think Maldini can do great again on the left.. Left sided player needs to run, attack and defend.. Maldini can do it for a few matches not for a full season.. And he's 36 now, next season he's 37 even..

Stam chasing trophies
Tuesday, 18 May 2004
by Paul Higham

Jaap Stam says that he opted to move to Milan for the chance to win trophies, and not because of the money.
The giant Dutchman has signed a two-year deal at San Siro after deciding to leave Lazio.

The 31-year-old says that he wanted to join the Serie A champions because he has a greater chance of winning trophies.

The former Manchester United man says that he decided against joining Juventus because of footballing reasons and not for the money.

"Milan is one of the biggest clubs in Europe," said Stam. "Here I can win everything, that is why I chose them.

"I didn't say no to Juve because of money but I simply preferred Milan because they are stronger and because they give me more guarantees.

"I had the pleasure to play in the best Manchester United team of Sir Alex Ferguson's era.

"With that shirt I won the Champions League, the Intercontinental Cup, three league titles and the FA Cup. It would be great to repeat this with the Rossoneri."

KONDR

Yasser, I would also prefer Stam on the right and Paolo in the center. But remember how many times Billy played as LB and quite succesful this season? How he erased Mancini?
And he is older and slower then Paolo!

Santi
19th May 2004, 03:26
Just glad to see this transfer didn't drag out for weeks...he will give Milan a fantastic option at CD...Billy did great, but Stam brings so much more security.

I saw him play at RB several time...he is no Cafu, but miles ahead of Simic.

GattusoKing
19th May 2004, 15:08
He`s also the French Young Player of the Year. A massively exciting young talent, but the acid test for any young player is always that second season, so we`ll see how he fairs then :)

As for Pancaro, I`d expect Milan to confirm his signature sometime this summer as he`s been simply outstanding.

VUGAR
19th May 2004, 19:12
I do expect Kakha to shine next season along with Pippo...what they need is in hands of Milan Lab..and it does miracles! Pancaro has been fundamental for us. I though it was a 2 year loan from Lazio....though if he's gonna be back to Lazio, then we will sign Evra;)..but after such an outstanding performance, IMO, Galliani will try to do this best to leave Pancaro in red and black jersey....

what worries me is a sub for Cafu;)

GattusoKing
19th May 2004, 19:20
Pancaro can, of course, also play RB and with Simic and Stam also creditable options there, I think we`re just about covered in that department :)

Why I joined AC Milan - Stam

www.foxsportsworld.com

Dutch international defender Jaap Stam insists the real prospect of winning more medals and not fat wages influenced his decision to join AC Milan ahead of his other suitors.

The 31-year-old made the switch from Lazio to the Rossoneri, with whom he signed a contract until the summer of 2006 last week after turning down offers from Inter Milan and Juventus.

Stam believes the recently-crowned Italian champions AC Milan afford him the best opportunity of adding to the medals he won during his short-lived Manchester United career.

"Milan is one of the biggest clubs in Europe," said Stam. 'Here I can win everything, that is why I chose them.

"I didn't say no to Juve because of money but I simply preferred Milan because they are stronger and because they give me more guarantees.

"I had the pleasure to play in the best Manchester United team of Sir Alex Ferguson's era. With that shirt I won the Champions League, the Intercontinental Cup, three league titles and the FA Cup. It would be great to repeat this with the Rossoneri."

STAM: 'Happy to be at Milan'

21 May 2004 17:05

MILAN - Just days after being officially unveiled as a Milan player, Jaap Stam has expressed his first impressions of the Rossoneri. He said on his personal site: 'I am very happy to have become a Milan player. There were a lot of clubs interested in me last season but I didn't know Carlo Ancelotti wanted me at the San Siro which was the only place I wanted to go.'
The defender added: 'It is a fantastic transfer as Milan offer me the possibility to win at the highest possible level. I was fortunate that I had great success with Manchester United, but know I am at a club where I can do even better. I hoped to have helped Lazio to win some important thing but unfortunately I wasn't happy there. Anyway, it was good to end my time in Rome with an Italian Cup victory.'

--------------------------

STAM: 'Fantastic to play in this Milan defence'

21 May 2004 17:17

MILAN - Jaap Stam then looked back on his time at Lazio and said: 'Notwithstanding the economic difficulties of the club, I was happy in Rome and have a great record of it. They were three marvelous years and the fans were fantastic. I want to thank them for all their support.'
However, the Dutch international is ready for a new adventure and added: 'All the Milan players are champions, I haven't seen where I will play as yet. It will be wonderful to play with great defenders such as Paolo Maldini. I have always thought of him as the greatest considering his career and all the honours he has amassed. I hope to learn a lot next season.'
Of course, there is more than just Maldini as Jaap admitted: 'There is also Costacurta, Nesta, Pancaro, kaladze and Cafu to name but five. On paper we have a very strong defence, but I don't know if we will all be able to play together. At present I don't know how the coach will employ us but I am sure it will be a pleasure.'

--------------------------

STAM: 'Same ambition as Milan'

21 May 2004 17:32

MILAN - Jaap Stam seems to be in total harmony with the Milan philosophy, explaining: 'The club's ambition mirrors my own as we both want to win the league title and Champions League next season. Milan are always chasing the most prestigious objectives and I am happy to be part of this fight next season.'

Jaap Stam has praised his new club, claiming it’s the best side he has ever played for and can contend for every trophy.

“I am very happy to be here,” said the former Lazio man on the official Milan website, “because playing with this squad will enable me to win it all, from the Champions’ League to the Serie A title.”

The 31-year-old had suggested a return to Holland before retiring, but the offer from the new Italian Champions changed his mind.

“An invitation to play for Milan is too good to turn down,” he continued. “I was fortunate to play for Manchester United in my career, but now I am in an even better club that shares my ambition.”

Stam split from Lazio after three seasons with mixed fortunes, financial difficulties and a ban for a failed drugs test.

“I hoped that I could help Lazio to victory,” he added, “but unfortunately it wasn’t as easy as that and we had some problems. I was very happy in Rome and thank the fans for all their affection in these three years.”

He did nonetheless leave the Stadio Olimpico with fond memories of the celebrations for the Coppa Italia.

what a defence.

I can see a 3 man defence, with the option of playing Cafu as an attacking right half when it comes to playing the harder to break down defencive teams, and ofcourse if things go skew-f they can always revert to a normal 4 man defence with Cafu falling back to right back, either way it's a great option to have.

That's right, but Stam also advancing in years... and for our tactics Cafu better than Stam at RB...
