Ancelotti: I could be Italy Coach Wednesday 31 December, 2003

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After Marcello Lippi and Fabio Capello ruled themselves out of the race, Carlo Ancelotti has hinted at an Azzurri future.

“I would be the ideal replacement for Giovanni Trapattoni at the helm of the Italy squad,” insisted the Coach in an interview with the ‘Corriere della Sera’ newspaper.

“I have all the right qualifications and a similar tactical outlook,” he added, “but I have no intention of leaving Milan.”

Ancelotti was considered the nearly man of Italian football after a series of second place finishes with Juventus and Parma.

However, in 2003 he put his name in the history books by guiding the Rossoneri to the Double of the Champions’ League and Coppa Italia.

There is the very distinct possibility that he will end his relationship with Milan at the end of this season following a disappointing Intercontinental Cup defeat to Boca Juniors and their tricky start to the Champions’ League.

The press in the peninsula is now seeking the man who will replace Trapattoni following his announcement that he would leave the Italy post after Euro 2004.

With Capello and Lippi, the two most successful club Coaches in the country, ruling themselves out the options are limited.

Under-21 boss Claudio Gentile did not seem particularly keen on the step up, while Gianluca Vialli has never even Coached a club side in Italy.

Well an interesting turn of events, and if this season turns out to be what most of us think and fear (disappointment - although i dont see how it can be disappointing apart from the performances) Then, this could a backdoor out of the contract for both parties, and save face at the same time!!

If this does ever happen...well Irureta is the one for me

However on the contrary, i do not think that this would be the best bet for Italy; Ancellotti is a "yes man" Whatever the FIGC says he will carry out i suppose, and he is not reknowned for his motivational skills or tactical masterpieces, what he's good at is organization and making a solid defense. Now for a team such as Portugal Spain etc where they need that sort of coach it would be good, but for a team that which already has two of the best international CB and a fantastic keeper + great organisation...does one think it will be a case of 2 negatives can make a positive?

However when i think of Mr Carlo and and and (:D) the fact that we could see more of Pirlo in the azzuri really makes me happy. (What would happen to Ambro though  would prob get games for Milan :thumb: but be snubbed for Italy...who cares...as long as he plays for milan!)

If the FIGC were to offer the job to Carlo there is no way he turns it down IMO, have to wait and see what Trap does after the Eurocup.

THis would make a lot of ppl happy and a lot of ppl sad. :D

A lot will obviously depend on how Milan fair during the remainder of the season. Should, God forbid, we finish in a lowly third or even fourth place, then I believe questions have to be asked of Carlo`s ability in a league format. Granted that there was a distinct lack of signings over the summer period, but the tools required to successfully challenge for the title are there, of which there can be no question. Another consideration is his alleged, some would call it apparent, lack of tactical nouse. Regardless of how well Milan perform, one always has the feeling that there`s still another gear waiting to be reached and that certain players, Pirlo and Kaka in particular, arent being deployed to full effect. Also, is he using the squad to full effect? Possibly not.

On the positive side of the coin, Carlo has guided the club to the CL, something which can never be dismissed on a whim. Surely any manager who manages such a feat during their first full season in charge and after such a hiatus from the CL cant be questioned in terms of their credentials. We`re also sitting fairly pretty in Serie A and again, are progressing steadily in both the CL and Coppa Italia. Couple that with the respect he commands from the players and his Milan roots and I dont think we could ask a great deal more of any manager.

We`ll have a better idea of what`s what come the end of the season but my personal preference, even should we fail to win the title, would be for Carlo to remain. He`s merited our patience and I believe at least another season at the helm. For many though, another season under Carlo will be bordering on inertia. We shall see ;)

Your common or garden Spurs fan would far sooner see O`Neill take the helm but with Liverpool also vying for his signature, I dont care for Spurs` chances. That leaves only a handful of credible alternatives namely Curbishley, Hiddink and Trapattoni. Whilst the latter of the three undoubtedly has the better credentials, he also happens to be 108 years of age and naturally isnt a long-term option. At best, I`d wager that Spurs would get three years tops from him which is far from ideal, but the club needs someone with his traits i.e. an experienced head who both commands and demands respect. Regarding his preferred style of play and then considering the `Spurs way of playing`, I dont believe that Spurs can afford to be picky, just as long as he assembles a winning team.

Rumours say he will sign right before Euro 2004 when season ends but I don't believe them, could be, could be not, time will tell
