I saw the game.. And Juve deserved to win !
Milan had like 3-4 chances 2 of them were from free kicks, one shot from Pirlo and the other was a chip from Pirlo to Pippo who was one on one with Buffon.. But he saw it nicer to miss.. !
Overall Juve played better, with Trezeguet having 2 great chances to score from crosses..
Del Piero was as usual invisible, Juve played a 4231 with Miccolo Nedved ADP behind Trez.. Davids was benched in favor of Appiah !
Buffon made a few great saves, same applies for Abbiati as well. Zambrotta had a shot against the bar in the 3rd half..
In penalties, Milan players had cool finishes.. Brocchi only missed, as for Juve players they all shot with power not brain.. But it was enough to seal a win for the Zebras..
Rui was somehow in Milan, Seedorf too slow and done nothing, I think Pirlo along Abbiati were the best..
Rino got a knock and was subbed for Max in the 1st half..
When Sergio came in for Seedorf and Brocchi for Rui, we changed to 442..

An undeserved loss as Milan for me were the superior side. Still, there`s no excuse for the lack of concentration after the goal especially against a side of Juve`s character. Many congrats to Juve and I hope this cup is of some solace to them after the CL defeat :)
Overall, a good performance from the guys especially so when considering that they`ve only been back in training for a few days. Nesta and Sheva were the standout performances for me, whilst Seedorf had a bit of a stinker. Distribution is something he really needs to work on.

"we want to entertain"...
Totally unbalanced squad.
The Serginho - Pirlo - Brocchi
Ambrosini
midfield is even better than our starting lineup.
And Totti + Kakà won't change anything because is still stays a "3 playmaker squad".
Juve play much better as ateam with not only the strikers having big chances out of the free flowing game (Zambrotta). We aer still unable to score form non penalties.

4th August 2003, 08:08
First and foremost congratulations to Juventus!!
-----
Getting to the match I am very disappointed in the way we threw the game away. If you ask me I will say we lost the game NOT on penalties but when we let Juve equalize in 30 secs!!!! It is really tough to see that we were a min away from a cup win but we blew it big time and just lost concentrations for a mere 30 seconds!!!! That is just not good!!!
Credit to Juve for pulling a back so quickly!!! Great fightback!!!
Keep noticing it guys. Our problem still remains scoring goals!! I know Buffon was excellent but even the best goalkeepers can do nothing if there is a good move!! ;) Hence it may seem that we are doing well but always keep this thing in mind that Milan still is not scoring goals!! Scoring goals is our Achilles Heal! I'm not totally convinced right now. I hope we can solve this scoring goals problem.
Bayman
4th August 2003, 08:17
We are not able to score because our game simply consists of Rui, Pirlo and Seedorf passing the ball to each other and waiting for a moment to put the ball through to the strikers. But as they both are closely marked and while still getting a shot on goal these are not free scoring opportunities.
While Juve in contrast have a MUCH better flowing game. Full backs and midfielders move around, make runs into the box, they PLAY with the strikers instead of just setting them up because their players are more than just ball distributors (like Rui, Pirlo as regista, Seedorf). They are COMPLETE midfielders. Baraja scored every third CL game. He can play to Sheva/Pippo getting the ball back and taking the chance himself + he can defend!!!
WE WON'T WIN ANYTHING NEXT SEASON with this sh*t called attractive, new brand football. lol
Bayman
4th August 2003, 08:25
And move Pirlo back behind the strikers. He is class, the Azzurinis highest scoring player ever, scored many goals out of the free game in that position in 2001/2002 season.
We don't need Totti, we don'need Kakà!!

Well, its always bad when you lose a final, but if this is Juve's revenge, I dont mind as out of all the cups, this one I value least. The most annoying thing for me was the performance of Legrottaglie, as he played very well, threatened up forward and looks to have made even more progress. He was ours for the taking........
Bayman

@Thunderkiss
Look at the past 6 years since the Bosman ruling.
Milan never buys promising, PROVEN young players.
We instead spend on overaged, overpaid stars playing in positions where we are already covered well or on unproven oneseason wonders (JM, ...).
Kakà and Totti will be playmaker No.5 and No.6. Stankovic is another "Legrottaglie": young, proven but still room for improvement and not too expensive. He'll be a Juve player soon.

4th August 2003, 08:59
You do have a valid arguement. When it comes to talent available in Italy, Milan do tend to bend-over for Juve somewhat, and while we have more freedom on the international market, regularly its players like Legrottaglie, Stankovic etc... that will win trophies for you, especially in Italy.
Then again, Galliani has re-stated that our number one priority this season is still the CL.

When i read your posts i get a big deja-vu feeling, like i have read it over and over and over again in you previos posts, not only here but on MM as well...
When I look at the context i see that I am right, basically this is the exact same post you posted at MM a few hours ago...
How about making up some new punch-lines?
If you love Juve, their midfield and their way of signings players so much, then what are you doing here? Sorry but I am pretty tired of hearing: "With Totti and Kaká we won´t win anything this year", "Juve´s midfield is much better because they can all attack and defend", "Juve are well covered this year, they bought Legrottaglie and soon the new "Legrottaglie", Stankovic" "attractive football is not important, what is important is to win".....That´s about it, the sum-up of 70% of your posts...
If I may give you a little history lesson, Berlusca wants attractive players, like Savicevic, Boban, Pirlo, Rui Costa, Seedorf ect...He is not a big fan of too many "workers"...
He wants us to play attractive football...That is how Milan plays, like it or not.
How far would we get by being a copy of Juve?? Not far because the key to Juve´s succés is not only to by midfielders with random abilities. The whole atmousphere in Juvé is suited for hard-working players, they train a lot more than any other team in Italy and focuses a lot more on tactics and disipline. If we were to play like Juve, as you wish, we would have to change the whole club, Milan is the extravagant club, with the big stars big salaries, the fashion and the fun of the game. That is how Milan is, that´s why we keep buying, in your eyes, unessential players...
Do you really think that if we bought Stankovic or Baraja that we would be more succésful?
People remember the style Milan displayed last year, not many remembers Juve´s matches besides the one against Real..
It is about what kind of football you prefer, but it is naive and pointless to keep bashing Milan for doing what they have done in almost 20 years...
If you want an effective, yet not as extravagant team, then go support Juve...
If you want attractive football with the biggest stars, then support Milan...
But stop bashing Milan for not being more like Juve, because they never will..
Bayman
4th August 2003, 10:01
I still don't understand how anyone can call our football brand since last december "attractive"...
Well and comparing this team to Boban/Savicevic 1994 team is pointless.
midfield and striking duo: Albertini (good defensive skills, regista, ball distributor), Desailly (Davids type of player offense + defense), Donadoni (winger type of player), Boban (playmaker type of player), Savicevic ("playing" second striker), Massaro (goalgetter)
That is something I call balanced: 4 different players in midfield, 2 strikers complementing each other + 2 true not out of position full backs.
Nicolas
4th August 2003, 10:12
When you get to be the team to beat, suddenly the other teams will defend much more and apply much more pressure on you, that is why we had a harder time to unvield our attractive display. Anyway our style did not change, nor did our intention of playing attractive...
What has that to do with anything?? What you just did was pointless, i wasn´t comparing the teams at all....
Milan has "specialized" in playing with attractive players like Pirlo, Rui, Seedorf, Kaká, Serginho, Cafú, that is how Milan play these days, face it or go to Juve if you like them so much...

well nico and bayman ... IMO u'r both right and also wrong .
u'r opinion actualy can cover up for each other ....
like when bayman said Nico ... Pass .... Pass .... Pass .... until the kingdom come ... will not goes anywhere these days , IMO it's true maybe last year we got away with it and can win something .... but now things are different .... every opponent team that played against us will know that milan playmakers will keep passing the ball around ... and then release a "Final" ball to the strikers , and by knowing and countering that tactic with high speed preasure ... the attractive football of last year can be change to some boring play ... so i think anceloti has to think something new for the strategy , like he has done last year
secondly Bayman the nico opinion by mimicking Juve is true ..... it will not make us surpass them .... remember last year we have something that completely new .... and the result ... double winner :D
maybe it's a good idea to copy their Work ethic , mentality and so on but not the syle of play ... .
Evolve not copied .... only then IMO we make some improvement
Nicolas
4th August 2003, 10:27
I am not talking about to notoriosly stick with the current template.
I am talking about blindly critisising Milan for something we are famous for and are not going to change in any way.
I am talking about be so anti-Milan and Pro-Juve that you seem like a Juventino...
I am talking about being so naive to think that buying One or two players will change a whole team....
People who has been milan fans for a long time would know that this is how Milan are, attractive and extravagant, the newer ones should learn it so they won´t expect another Juve here is Milano...

That is riducoules, to copy the club ethic of Juve, IS to copy them. Face it, Milan will never be like Juve, Milan will never be a less fashionable and more working club, like Juve is....Never, so give it up...They are not going to copy Juve or the club ethics but go on with their own style
Meriva
4th August 2003, 11:08
ehm .... to choose and take example from something better then ours is not the same as 100% copying .....
Juve has it good and bad side ..... Milan also has the same .....
i think there's no wrong if we collect some of juve good side as our example to cover the bad side of Milan ... if we think that we have an attidude that is better then them , then we should not coppy them although juve had also good attitude also ...
(why ? ... cos what we have is better then them )
but if we have a bad attitude that needs improving , and juve had the one we need why not make example of them
the ability to choose which ours is better and which of ours is worst is the most important thing
So ... the thing that i have to face is that Milan isn't perfect and so does juve .... and it will be wise for us IMO to learn something ( not entirely !!! ) from our enemy and use it against them ... this is a good attitude not only in football but also in life .... SO i will never ever gave it up

I too was shocked at the way Milan played, but mine was of pleasant surprise. It must be remembered that they`ve only had but a mere few days of training under their belts, so to produce some of the football that they did against Juve, I dont think one can be anything but complimentary. They did everything BUT put the ball in the net but that`ll come as the season gets underway ;) A loss it may be, but I`m extremely positive about what I saw.

To me, playing good and entertaining football (both attack and defense), is more important than winning. The reason is if you do play well, results will come in time. Unfortunally i didnt get to see this match, but i do believe that there were several positive things in our play, so the loss isnt that hard to swallow.
I do wish Milan would try to invest more in talents, as in giving them more faith in the a-squad. But I've settled with the fact that we arent following that path, at least not much, and I can live with it. Let it be said, I do think that we have gotten many good buys and free transfer players the last few seasons, and even thought not everyone is successful, there will always be a risk for failure.

I've seen the match now and I'm really pleased with what I saw. We look very solid already in every line. Cafu need some more adjustments in our tactics, but with time it will be solved I'm sure.
I hope the injury of Gattuso isn't that bad, because he's a key member IMO.
Juventus was good too, but didn't impress me. Their new buys are solid, but nothing to fear of. Legrotagli played well, but wasn't awesome, same goes for Miccoli and Appiah. When Juve has a fit squad, they'll have problems to make it to the starting 11.
I think our strikers played a good match allready so early in the season. Finally they could become a master pair this season. I really liked the desire in the eyes of Pippo, like we know him. He still has it, that determination. Always great to see.
Another praise have to go to our Capitano. He'll play with us untill the age of 40 at least.
IMO we are slightly better then Juventus in form. And no, I don't want to copy a single bit of Juve's style. Keep your own identity and make it into perfection. Milan has to stay a team who makes the play and who prefers technique over running abilities.

So- if there where anyone who cared about this decimated supercup before... I take it that tempers have calmed down and I can insert a Juve point of view :).
Personally I thought it was a scandal to play a trophee game after both teams had had 12-13 days of training, but so be it. The power of the green and I know that Juve made €2.5 million off that tour in total. It will pay some salaries and perhaps earned is some leverage in dealing with the US market.
In any case- as far as the game is concerned I was impressed with the way Milan played in the opening stages of both halfs. It is somewhat true when Bayman says that your passing can become a bit pedestrian at times, but still you also created enough openings to score and in those periods were the dominant team.
In the end- over 90 minutes I belive it's fair to say that while Milan saw more of the ball and displayed the more attractive football most of the time- scoring chances were created in even measure, and a draw was fair. It should have been 2-2 instead though, but both sides have excellent keepers.
In the extratime periods I think Juventus were marginally better, since the physical charachteristics of players like Appiah, Tacchinardi and Nedved started shining through and Gattuso seemed to be missing for Milan. Juventus won more of the second balls and showed more grinta and willingness to run for eachother at this stage.
Obviously I thought it was over when Pirlo scored that nice and cheeky penalty (awarded by Collina who some persist to think is pro-Juve.. for some reason... Legrottaglie and rather a few television viewers may have some doubt on that pk :)).
Then- a moment of lack of professionalism from Milan, and Trez took advatage, and we were back in.
Shootout... was a shootout and this time we won. Nothing more to say about that.
What Juve fans take from the game:
1: The feeling of beating you in this way was both very satisfactory and somewhat sad, as this was surely not the game we would have liked to win. In any case it was a morale booster, and a good way to start the season.
2: Milan started in what has to be regarded it's present '1.st' formation- depending on whether you buy more players before the deadline of course. We didn't have Thuram, Davids was punished with the bench for having broken the disciplinary code (went out on the town while in NY) and we tried a brand new central defence and still measured up. Encouraging.
At the same time Di Vaio came on to really bring us to life which was something we really missed from him last year. Miccoli- without shining, is a rather substantial upgrade on Salas. Appiah- a very encouraging vice-Davids in a position where last year we would use Tudor or Conte  .
The discussion between Bayman and Nicolas is rather interesting.
It seems Nicolas and Payman are very much in agreement about virtually everything (judging by Payman's posts at XT and what I've seen from Nicolas).
I don't think it's very relevant for Bayman to want alot of change to the side that won a double last year. I also have to say that if you were to hypothetically substitute Rui and Totti it wouldn't be the same because Totti is MUCH MUCH more direct and selfish in his game that Rui. Rui makes you look real good at times, more than Totti ever could, but Totti is a much more effective player. But in general I also think there's a refreshing self critical quality about Bayman's posts, because Milan often look to play better than the opponents, but in serieA at least it's also often because they're allowed to be the elaborate passing side.
At the same time I think Nicolas is totally going overboard with the stuff about Milan always being a team striving towards being super entertaining. No- you are not! You never played as offensive looking a team as you did last season. Not since Sacchi at least, and that team had more balance still.
The problem is that Pirlo can make you click offensively from deep, but it will never be as balanced as it was with Rijkaard or Desailly in the glory days. It's true that Milan has always gone for stars with Berlusconi, but I find it rather pompous saying that it has spilled over into Milan actually playing attractive football. This isn't Spain. When Milan was the best team in the world by far- you still never excited the casual observer like the Barca "DreamTeam" - never mind that you destroyed them in Athens with ruthlessly effective football. I'm not saying that to put anyone down- I know Juventus didn't either from 1996-98. Zeman's teams wanted to play all out offence... and he got his reward didn't he :D ?
It's looking like becoming a great season. My questionmark on Milan is for the league and whether you can find another level of stability than what we saw last year. Sheva looked rather hot the other night and that could help greatly of course as he had an off year last season, but on the other hand it might be difficult to expect Pippo getting such a magnificent season again. It all depend on whether your midfield will click and be efficient enough I think. It could be, as the potential is surely there, but neither Seedorff, Rui or Pirlo are known for their great consistency and never were. That is of course Juve's great advantage in terms of the league.
I have no doubts that you will be a factor in CL, but I think there are 4 teams with an equal chance there being pre-favourites (United has lost out with the Becks-Veron departures).
Milan, Juve, Bayern and Madrid in no particular order are all sides that can beat eachother on any given night. There are more teams who can beat all 4 sides of course, but I think these look the frontrunners early on. It will come down to form, luck, injuries/suspensions when we reach the latter stages I think, but I would be very surprised if the winner wasn't one of these 4.
Ciao.

i was very pleased with the way milan played in this game. we showed creativity and patience when it was needed. pirlo had a great game and i wish he moved be moved up behind the forwards. he has the skills to take rui costa's place. one thing that really did bother me was the that sheva and pippo were on different pages the whole game. in the first half they were running into each others space and that gives our midfield no choice but to pass pass pass. one possible solution is if rivaldo produces this year, he would add creativity and another dangerous option on free kicks. i would like to see rivaldo and sheva pairing up a lot this season. and having rui costa, pippo and JDT being another tactical solution. anyways just some thoughts. one last thing, mercato i think it is great that you post here, it is nice to have a non milan biased member.
